Speed Selector drives do not require any daily or short term maintenance, and therefore offer a field performance that is not dependent upon any customer maintenance activity.
Outlined below is a history of design innovations that were developed and introduced by Speed Selector, which will explain our reputation for unsurpassed product quality and performance.

INTRODUCED HARD ANODIZED ALUMINUM PULLEY FACES.

  • Use of aluminum allows for more precise machining of pulley faces, and significantly reduces pulley weight.
  • Hard anodizing of the aluminum faces results in our pulleys outwearing cast iron or steel pulleys. Our pulleys will not groove when run at one speed for long periods, and can withstand the most severe atmosphere - including caustic washdown solutions.

INTRODUCED THE PATENTED COPROLON BUSHING.

  • Speed Selector pulleys should not be lubricated. The Coprolon bushing provides just enough lubrication between the pulley face and pulley shaft that no scheduled maintenance is required.
  • Pulleys do not need to be run thru their speed range on a daily or scheduled basis to prevent them from sticking.

INTRODUCED FIRST 60 HORSEPOWER VARIABLE SPEED PULLEY DRIVE.

INTRODUCED THE INTERCHANGEABLE COLLET.

  • The collet is tapered at one end such that when it is drawn into the pulley it will clamp down on the motor shaft with a 360 grip.
  • Keys, keyways, and setscrews are no longer needed to hold the pulley on the shaft, thus eliminating a major source of fretting corrosion. Pulley removal even after years of use is made easy.

INTRODUCED ALUMINUM COMPANION SHEAVES

  • Weighing 1/3 to 1/2 the weight of cast iron companion sheaves of comparable size, the aluminum sheaves are capable of rim speeds in excess of 20,000 surface feet per minute versus the 5,000 FPM associated with cast iron sheaves.

INTRODUCED THE FIRST 3:1 RATIO 100 HORSEPOWER DRIVE.

  • This drive offers an overall speed range of 3:1, while transmitting 100 horsepower on a single wide section "V" belt.

INTRODUCED THE POSITIVE DRIVE CARTRIDGE.

  • In our spring loaded pulleys, the key located between the moving face and pulley shaft is eliminated.
  • Instead torque is transmitted by precision machined interlocking splines, and driving lugs in the positive drive cartridge.
  • Stress is no longer concentrated on the key, but instead dispersed over a much greater surface area at much greater diameters.
  • Elimination of the keyway allows for a full 360 area of contact between the lubricating bushing and pulley shaft.

INTRODUCED THE FIRST COLLET-STYLE CONTROL PULLEY.

  • See Interchangeable Collett above

INTRODUCED ENTERPRISE SERIES DRIVES.

  • Speed Selector's well reputed Series 45 drives, were designed into cast housings that accept NEMA standard C-Face Motors and reducers.
  • Initially designed for 5hp through 60hp applications, drives run cooler, quieter, and longer then any competitive drive.

INTRODUCED ENTERPRISE 321 DRIVES.

  • The enclosed belt drive line was expanded to include drive packages from fractional through a 3hp capacity.

INTRODUCED THE SLIC BUSHING.

  • This non-metallic lubricating bushing proved effective in applications with particularly abrasive atmospheres, outdoor applications, and textile applications.
  • Though more costly than our Coprolon Bushing, its field performance warranted its standardization in all 20hp through 100hp drives by 1994.

INTRODUCED TUNGSTEN/CARBIDE COATED PULLEY FACES.

  • Available as an option to our standard hardcoating, this coating was developed to increase pulley life in severe applications such as foundry snag grinders.
  • This coating has allowed our pulleys to outlast cast iron and steel alternatives by as much as 400% and at least 100%.
